Montgomery Plan
OUR MISSION -- LEARNING THROUGH SERVICE

The Montgomery Plan, a student committee open to grades 7-12, provides an organizational structure for students interested in extending their Burroughs’ learning through involvement in service to the local community. Montgomery Plan promotes awareness of social issues in the community and serves as a link between the student body and outside service opportunities. In keeping with the school’s philosophy, the Plan encourages students to take an active role as individual participants and leaders and as a school group, as a means of appreciating the greater St. Louis community and as a means of experiencing the enjoyment and pride of meeting their responsibilities as citizens.
Through community service and reflection upon that service, students enhance their own growth as they gain perspective, knowledge, and judgment of social issues. The Montgomery Plan considers itself in partnership with other school groups such as Diversity, Etc., Amnesty International, and other groups that broaden and enrich our students’ experiences beyond our campus. Ulimately, the Montgomery Plan promotes movement toward a socially involved, well-informed, empathetic, just, and openminded Burroughs community that comes together through service.

About Gaylord Montgomery
About Gaylord C. Montgomery
G MontgomeryThe Montgomery Plan for voluntary community service was named for its creator, Gaylord C. Montgomery, who was a member of the Burroughs faculty for 37 years. Mr. Montgomery was a math teacher, soccer coach, summer school director and author of 24 math and science books. He promoted the concept that students should take an active role in community affairs. He thought the involvement and interaction of students outside their own environment would help them better understand and empathize with those who did not have the remarkable advantages of a Burroughs student. He also believed that to reach full personal benefit, the participation should be voluntary.

The nearly four-decade old program remains true to Mr. Montgomery’s vision and is an integral part of the Burroughs experience.
